I’ve had a passion for ballet and ballerinas since I was 3, like many other little girls. I started dance at that age and at 15 had to make the tough choice between ballet and the other fun activities high school had to offer. I think this decision was one of the few I regret in life, yet today I still reap the benefits of this amazing art form.
Not all is lost. What I needed to do struck me one evening while chatting with a great friend over dinner about her daughter that dances with the Joffrey Ballet’s Children’s Program and that she has never been photographed there! I never had a huge interest in photographing little girls in tutus or cheesy dance recital photos, but pre-teen girls coming into their own and confident teenage girls on pointe, I would fall all over. Perhaps this is because these are my last memories of dance in my own life and it’s a turning point for many…to take it to the pre-professional level or quit. Once the idea hit my head and my girlfriend enthusiastically encouraged me, there was no stopping me from getting this rolling.
I put out a model call for young pre-teen ballerinas, with the vision of a series of artistic images of the dancers as you might see of the prima ballerinas of the world in the magazines. These girls deserve to see themselves in this light, for the beautiful mature dancers they are. They have so much to feel proud of and should look at themselves and think ‘wow, that’s ME!’ During this stage in life, with so much uncertainty, this is something they should feel very certain of, that they are great dancers.
Well, the girls were amazing and we had SO much fun. I think I had even more fun doing the poses along with them! They each take their dancing seriously and have really mastered the grace and poise required. It was such a joy to see them all doing what they love and to create a piece of art for them to have. Thank you to all the girls and their moms and dads that brought them for the event.
I’m so happy with the results and I hope this leads to photographing more dancers in and around Chicago. I think I’ve found a new niche. Please contact me if you have a young dancer that you’d like photographed!
